OUR STORY

Hi. I’m Dann  and I am the founder of Evolved Dimensions.

My love for 3D started when I was just a kid visiting my first 3D attraction at Disney world. I’ll never forget putting on those magical glasses and watching everything leap off the screen and float inches from face! From then on, I was hooked. Not just hooked… obsessed- with 3D! I would spend my time searching for anything 3D related- magazines, books, movies, glasses, novelty items, and poring over articles, books and 3D images to unlock the mysteries of how it all worked!

In the process of learning about and deconstructing the mechanics of stereoscopic 3D, I acquired more and more 3D products, books, magazines, comics films and other material to analyze. Naturally, almost by accident, I became a collector.

In the early 2000s, I began connecting with other collectors and enthusiasts.  At that time, getting one’s hands on a quality 3D film, let alone a viable method of viewing it was no easy task!  3D TVs did not yet exist, 3D blu rays were not even thought of (in fact, even 2D blu rays weren’t created until 2006!)  I found myself endlessly searching for obscure sources to view 3D movies.  DVDs, VHS, Betamax tapes, and VHD disks (a short lived video format popular in Japan that was capable of viewing full color 3D movies).   More often than not, the 3D version of a film was not available anywhere in which case I would often buy the original 16mm film reels in hope of matching them up and creating a 3D print.  I made a hobby of buying and selling this material to support my endless quest to view long forgotten 3D movies again.

Through casual buying and selling, connections were made and interest began to grow.  In 2008, I officially launched “underground3dmovie.com”: a place for enthusiasts to connect and get access to my growing collection!  The website took off and turned into much more than a hobby!  Over the next couple years, I began building relationships with companies that were manufacturing 3D equipment.  I could now offer my customers rare movies and equipment to watch it with!

In 2010, the idea of watching 3D movies at home started to gain popularity as some of the “big players” in consumer electronics started to get on board with the 3D revolution.  With the creation of the “3D Blu ray”, companies like Samsung, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, LG, Sony, Vizio, Sharp and many others began to develop and release “3D TVs (some had already released some “3D-ready” TVs previously, but with no simple way to view 3D material, the knowledge and popularity of this feature was limited).  With the 3D Blu ray, the industry finally started pushing out titles in a consumer format that was high quality and relatively easy to view!  3D movies were becoming less “underground”.  This called for a change in direction for “Underground 3D Movies.”

As 3D TVs and projectors were released, the biggest problem was each of these large companies wanted to corner the market, but as a result, each manufacturer created products utilizing different technology.  Some TVs required bluetooth glasses, some RF, some infrared (and among the infrared glasses, none used the same protocol!)  This not only meant Panasonic glasses would not work with Sony TVs (for instance) it also meant mass confusion for the public when trying to make purchasing decisions.  Imagine buying up 3D glasses for $150 a piece (yes, this is what they cost at the time!) and then finding out that they could not even be used with the TV you just invested thousands into.  In 2011, I developed a way to solve this problem.  Universal 3D glasses.  Finally glasses that would work with nearly any 3D TV!  To my surprise, the sales took off!  I realized quickly it was time to create a “real business” and brand to support this ever-growing endeavor.  In 2011, True Depth 3D was born!  In time, we would add some staff and create and release a number of products to make 3D viewing accessible to anyone!  From our line of 3D glasses to meet every need to our release of virtual reality and 3D gaming systems, 3D was the “new wave” and we were riding it!

in 2016, the excitement of 3D started dying off.  Less and less manufacturers were pushing 3D TVs as “the next big thing”.  In fact, many weren’t even making them anymore!  In 2017, 3D TV manufacturing ceased completely and the “3D at home movement” was dead (at least as far as the industry was concerned).  While all these changes certainly led to  massive amounts of people losing interest in 3D, the true fans remain… just as they always have!

2017 was a year of change.  Our brand name got the attention of Apple.  We were made an offer and transferred the rights of the name (True Depth is now used as the trademark name for their camera in the iPhone)  With what was gained, we re-branded our products and continued sales. and eventually released our popular “RetroDepth LT” glasses for 3D projectors!

Over the years, I’ve remained in touch with many fans and enthusiasts.  One thing unites us:  the memories of enjoying 3D entertainment at one time of our lives or another.

Evolv3Dimensions is 3D reborn!  We exist as not only a platform to provide you products to re-live 3D experience, but also as a personal piece of history for all of who continue to enjoy the journey together.  Thank you to all of you who have been part of it along the way and welcome to those who are discovering the wonder for the first time!  We continue to be committed to creating experiences full of nostalgia,  richness, and… depth.
